Mike McLemore
Mike McLemore has been a name associated with the outdoors for many years. He started out calling ducks when he was a young boy hunting with his father and his uncles. He owes a lot of his success to learning to listen - to the ducks and geese and to other callers. Mike won the Tennessee State Duck Calling Contest twice, in 1972 and 1973. From there, he captured the World Duck Calling Champion title in Stuttgart, Arkansas, in 1973, 1974, and 1977. In 1980 Mike won out over seven other former World Duck Calling Champions to highlight his calling career with the coveted "Champion of Champions" title. Since he could no longer compete in the professional arena calling to judges, he was very excited to accept a challenge of competition duck hunting in the War Eagle Shootout in 1999 in which contestants were pitted against each other in the field, over a three day period, to see who could call in and harvest the most ducks. It was a contest of calling, decoy setting, and just plain fun. Mike came out on top, and parts of his winnings were cheerfully donated to St. Jude Hospital.
Mike's calling of ducks has not been isolated to the south, but the universal language has decoyed birds from Maryland's Eastern shores to the Texas coast. He has seen his beloved sport grow in mammoth proportions. He has traveled extensively doing calling demonstrations at Ducks Unlimited fund raisers, judging duck and goose calling contests, appearing at outdoor sports shows, and selling his line of game calls developed originally in the 70's. Mike believes the hunter must have good equipment to compete on the contest stage or in the natural venues of field and stream. "No one can make a bad call sound good," and Mike is always willing to take time to help anyone interested with their calling and gives each call and each individual his personal attention.
Mike lives in Huntington, TN, with wife, Anita, and his youngest daughter, Mallary. He continues to love the outdoors as much as ever though his health prevents him from participating as much as he used to. Mike has made a lasting impression on the duck hunting scene. He made this field his vocation when he began to manufacture duck, goose, and turkey calls under his own company name in 1978. He continues to endorse products used in waterfowl hunting, turkey hunting, fishing, and related sports. He has made friends from every walk of life, and he treasures each one. One of his primary interests now is squirrel hunting with dogs, Mountain Curs, and Feists. That occupies most of his days when he isn't going to a duck blind or goose pit with his son and friends.
