Mike McLemore

Mike McLemore has been a name associated with the outdoors for many years. He started out calling ducks when he was a young boy hunting with his father and his uncles. He owes a lot of his success to learning to listen - to the ducks and geese and to other callers. Mike won the Tennessee State Duck Calling Contest twice, in 1972 and 1973. From there, he captured the World Duck Calling Champion title in Stuttgart, Arkansas, in 1973, 1974, and 1977.

PBS Reading Ranger "Rocky T" To Visit Boat Show

Kids! Meet "Rocky T" - one of WLJT's Reading Rangers. Rocky will be on site signing autographs and ready for photo opportunities during that time period.

Local area PBS station WLJT - Channel 11's Education & Outreach Department conducts seminars and workshops throughout West Tennessee teaching parents and educators how to help children get ready-to-learn. With free books for the kids, parents, teachers and caregivers are taught how to open the world of reading to their children. They are provided with tools they can use in their homes and classrooms to help children improve their reading skills. WLJT has given away thousands of books to West Tennessee kids through scores of events and personal visits.

McGruff the Crime Dog

McGruff the Crime Dog is world famous for my advice on how to stop crime before it happens, and for his great sense of humor. His job is to help people - especially kids - learn how to be safe and make their neighborhood safer.

Something else you should know about McGruff is that he goes all over the country to talk to people about how they can "take a bite out of crime." So when you see McGruff in your town, stop by and say hi. You can recognize him by his tan trench coat - he never goes anywhere without it.

Smokey Bear

Created in 1944, the Smokey Bear campaign is the longest running public service campaign in history. Smokey's first forest fire prevention message remained unchanged for 50 years until April 2001, when the Ad Council updated his message to address the increasing number of wildfires in the nation's wildlands. As one of the world's most recognizable fictional characters, Smokey's image is protected by US Federal Law and is administered by the USDA Forest Service, the National Association of State Foresters and the Ad Council.
